Dublin is the oldest city in Ireland and has remained the capital for many centuries. People settled there from long before the time of Christ but most historians agree that it was the Vikings that established the first major settlement in the mid 9th century and they continued to rule for the next 250 years. The Vikings, also known as Norsemen, began to lose their influence from the middle of the Superstore tv series 11th century.The Vikings travelled all over Europe and North Africa from Scandinavia in their longboats from the mid 8th century to the 11th century, raiding and looting the coasts along the way. Britain and Ireland were regular targets of their pillaging during that time.
Many of these raiders settled down in various locations and some built permanent settlements and fortifications. Dublin, on the East coast of Ireland became one of their biggest cities in Europe.
The Norsemen gained a reputation for fierceness and ruthlessness and coastal inhabitants lived in constant fear of their arrival. The Vikings killed anyone who resisted them or kidnapped any who might be useful as slaves and the robbed all the food, livestock and valuables they came across. They often raided monasteries, stealing the gold and silver and killing the inhabitants.
The increase in trade, goods, skills and knowledge brought by the Vikings made Dublin a thriving Mom 1 and prosperous city. After a few centuries they had integrated with the native population through intermarriage so that by the 12th century they were no longer distinguishable as a separate race.

There are various exhibitions in Dublin which give an insight into life in Viking Dublin. One exhibition is called Dublinia where various periods of Dublin history are brought to life. The Viking World gives a comprehensive history of the Vikings from their beginnings in Scandinavia, their amazing impact on Western Europe, to their impact on the subsequent history if Ireland.

The guide, who looks like a genuine Viking will lead you on a trip through Dublin of the Vikings with its narrow streets, animals, children, smells and sounds. You will get a real feel of life of Dublin whose name comes from Dubh Linn meaning 'Black Pool'
Many of the archaeological items which were unearthed during the excavation of sites around Dublin are on show at The Viking Adventure. Some of these objects were found when the foundations for Dublin's Civic Offices at Wood Quay were being dug in the 1970's. The Offices were built despite long and bitter protests from conservationists.
